Home Learning Guidelines

At All Saints’ CofE Primary School, we believe that regular practice at home helps children to develop confidence, independence and positive learning habits.

As part of our Homework Guidelines, we ask children to complete the following activities at home each week:

Nursery

We encourage parents and carers to:

  • Share stories with an adult.

  • Talk about the pictures together.

  • Retell the story using the illustrations.

  • Read favourite stories repeatedly so that children become familiar with the language and characters.

  • Reception - read for 15 minutes

Your Class Teacher may also send out optional weekly supplementary Home Learning ideas.

Year 1 - Year 6

  • 15 minutes of reading

  • Spelling practice

Tuesday

  • 15 minutes of reading

  • Times tables or number bond practice

Wednesday

Please write a brief note on the Learning with Parents platform when they complete any of the activities above so that staff can celebrate their efforts and achievements. If your child chooses to complete additional learning at home, we would love to see it. Children are welcome to bring their work into school or share photographs with their class teacher via Class Dojo.

Reading at Home

Reading regularly is one of the most important things you can do to support your child's learning.

We recommend:

  1. Encouraging your child to read as often as possible and to follow their interests.

  2. Providing a variety of reading materials such as books, magazines, recipes, comics and song lyrics.

  3. Reading together and modelling expression by changing your voice for different characters and events.

  4. Using "echo reading" – read a short section aloud while your child follows the text, then ask them to read the same section back to you.

Spelling at Home

Try some of the following activities:

  1. Write a sentence or short paragraph that includes all of the spelling words.

  2. Use the LCWC strategy (Look, Cover, Write, Check).

  3. Create a word search using the spelling words.

  4. Write the words using different coloured pens, pencils or felt tips to highlight letter patterns.

If you are in Year 2-6, your child can access the Spelling Shed platform which will have a range of games that they can play linked to the spelling rules for the week.
